Schmitt celebrates statewide education wins

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

STATEHOUSE (Oct. 27, 2026) — State Sen. Daryl Schmitt (R-Jasper) is celebrating the hard work of Hoosier students and teachers after recent education wins in Indiana.

In recent years, Senate Republicans have worked to improve Hoosier students’ literacy rates by implementing the Science of Reading curriculum and providing a comprehensive plan to help students achieve reading proficiency. Currently, Indiana is sixth in the nation for reading after the implementation of Science of Reading.

Indiana is also No. 1 in the nation for the percentage of high school students earning college credits, with the average student earning 15 credits before graduation.

"These highlights are a result of our state's great teachers who have dedicated their careers to ensuring Hoosier students have a bright future," Schmitt said. "I'd like to thank the teachers, students and parents for all their hard work in making Indiana’s future brighter.”

In 2025, the General Assembly approved the state’s current balanced budget, which increased K-12 tuition support by $960 million over the biennium.

"As your state senator, I will continue to find ways to ensure Hoosier students and teachers have the tools they need to be successful," Schmitt said. "I will continue working with parents, teachers, administrators and my colleagues as we prepare for the 2027 session and the important work that must be done."

Schmitt encourages constituents to contact him with any questions or comments they may have. Schmitt can be reached by filling out a "Contact Me" form online at www.IndianaSenateRepublicans.com/Schmitt or by phone at 800-382-9467.
